The Bowen Technique – what is it and how can it help you?
The Bowen Technique was developed in Australia by Tom Bowen (1916-82) and was brought to the UK in 1993.
The Technique is a remedial, hands-on therapy that is applied using a series of light rolling type moves on specific points of the body. These moves, which involve no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue, stimulate the muscles, fascia and underlying soft tissues and give you an experience that is gentle and relaxing as well as prompting your body to reset, balance and repair itself. Clients have also reported beneficial effects when they have been stressed or fatigued.
The beneficial effects of the Bowen Technique are not dependent on the amount of pressure applied to your body, and the Technique is therefore safe to use on anyone – from tiny babies to frail elderly people, not forgetting everyone in-between!
No-one is entirely sure how the therapy works. There is a lack of true knowledge about the innermost workings of the brain and how the healing response is triggered and evaluated. The Bowen Technique is a truly holistic therapy, and concurs with the definition that ‘the body be treated as a whole without referral to named disease’.
It is often found that the original cause of pain or discomfort may not actually be at the same location on your body as the pain being felt. For example, back pain may be experienced because you have altered your posture after a knee injury.
It can often be difficult to know the actual origin of a problem, so your initial treatment will usually include Bowen moves from your head to your knees and can often address seemingly unrelated issues at some distance from the ‘problem’ area.
The holistic nature of the Bowen Technique can be demonstrated when treating patients with long-term illnesses: they report that they have experienced pain relief, improvement of function and a recovery in their energy levels.
By definition, a holistic therapy does not treat specific diseases – it treats the whole person. The Bowen Technique is NOT a substitute for medical treatment, and the information given on this website is not intended to replace guidance from a suitably qualified medical professional.
There will be an initial discussion about how you hope to benefit from your Bowen treatment – about the origins of any pain or concerns you may have, and the restrictions those problems are placing on you. You could be an athlete with recurrent hamstring problems, a golfer who has lost their flexibility when they swing, or a shopper who can’t bend down to the lower shelves in the supermarket.
There may be some assessments of your current range of movement, or of the alignment of some areas of your body, so that comparisons can be made week on week.
The Bowen work is usually done with you lying on a treatment couch, directly on skin or through light, loose clothing. There will be a few rolling type moves done on your body and the therapist will leave the room for a couple of minutes to allow you to ‘chill’ and give your body time to evaluate the messages it has received, and for the tissues to respond. This will be the pattern throughout the treatment, with a few moves done followed by a short break.
Your first treatment will be of a general all-over nature and will last from 45 to 60 minutes depending on the length of the initial discussion and evaluation, and the amount of treatment given.
After your first treatment, you will be given a note outlining aftercare. Although you may not initially be aware of changes, the Bowen work will continue to encourage your body to adjust for up to 2-3 days. These adjustments require energy, so it is important that you drink plenty of water to prevent de-hydration, and that you refrain from extreme exercise for a couple of days, but conversely, it is also important to keep moving about regularly.
There may be transitory affects as your body adjusts, and if you are concerned, please feel free to contact Fran to discuss them. Mostly, any resulting stiffness or discomfort will pass away very quickly.
How many treatments will I need?
Most clients will have lasting responses after 3 to 4 sessions – even long-standing pain has been seen to be relieved in many cases. Treatments sessions should ideally be a week apart, but anything between 5 and 9 days is acceptable.
Many clients find it beneficial to have ‘top up’ treatments every 6 to 8 weeks to maintain optimum health.
Can I mix Bowen technique with other therapies?
- The Bowen work done on your body is asking your tissues to undertake a repair process, and they must be allowed to do this without interruption or confusion for the work to be of full value to you. Please leave at least a week either side of your Bowen appointment should you need another form of physical or energetic therapy.
The charge for a Bowen Technique session with Fran at her home is £40.
Treatment sessions that have been booked, and are cancelled with less than 24 hours notice are liable to be charged the full fee.
